Ready to ring in the new year? Here are 10 habits to give up before the New Year to set yourself up for a successful 2024.
As the year comes to a close, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the past and setting resolutions for the future. Does this sound familiar? We dive into the new year with great determination to change those things we know we should be working on. However, somewhere around the middle of February, we find ourselves crawling out of bed in the afternoon while our New Year resolutions weep in the corner.
Why does this happen? Why are we not able to see our new year resolutions through to the end? It’s not the lack of a strong start because our intention is to be our best self. I think the reason this happens is due to either not being prepared or setting unrealistic expectations.
As I work on separating myself from some habits, I thought this would be a perfect time to share with you. So as we approach 2024, consider making a commitment to ditch these ten habits for a happier and healthier new year.
Overcommitting
Juggling too many commitments can lead to burnout and exhaustion. Learn to say no and set realistic boundaries to protect your time and energy. Prioritize activities that align with your goals and bring you joy.
Inadequate Sleep
A good night’s sleep is essential for overall well-being. Commit to getting sufficient rest by establishing a consistent sleep schedule, creating a calming bedtime routine, and creating a sleep-conducive environment.
Conducive Environment
- Dim Lighting: Before bedtime, gradually reduce the lighting in your environment. Dim lighting signals to your body that it’s time to wind down. Consider using soft, warm-toned lamps instead of bright overhead lights.
- Cool Room Temperature:Maintain a cool and comfortable room temperature. Most people find temperatures between 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 20 degrees Celsius) conducive to sleep. Adjust your bedding to suit the climate and your personal preferences.
- Noise Reduction: Minimize noise disturbances in your sleeping environment. Use earplugs or white noise machines if needed. Consider blackout curtains to block out external light and noise.
- Comfortable Sleepwear:Wear comfortable and breathable sleepwear. Choose fabrics that suit your preferences and the temperature of your sleeping environment.
- Comfortable Mattress and Pillows: The right mattress and pillows contribute significantly to a good night’s sleep by ensuring proper spinal alignment and reducing discomfort.
Excessive Caffeine and Sugar Intake
While moderate consumption of caffeine and sugar is acceptable, excessive intake can lead to negative health outcomes. Monitor your consumption, opt for healthier alternatives, and stay hydrated with water.
Ignoring Mental Health
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Prioritize self-care activities, such as meditation, mindfulness, or therapy, to address stress, anxiety, or other mental health concerns. Seek professional help if needed and break the stigma surrounding mental health.
Sedentary Lifestyle
I work from home, so I know how hard it can be to stay active when you have the option to stay in bed and work from the bed. I try to walk at least 4 miles a day but there are some days I lack the motivation and can find a number of excuses not to go for my walk. My goal is not to enter into 2024 with the same energy, so I’ve been making some S.M.A.R.T changes to my routine, which have been working wonderfully in keeping my body active.
Here are some simple things you can do to quit your sedentary lifestyle before the new year:
- Stretch for a few minutes after waking up.
- Go out for a walk, even if it’s a short one and if the weather is not great, walk indoors. I use Walk At Home with Leslie Sansones via YouTube.
- Aim to walk at least 5k steps a day. Get a tracker to track your steps.
- Pick up more chores.
- Avoid your bed unless you have to unwind or sleep.
- When doing desk work, take breaks to stretch and walk around.
Remember, regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining good health. Break free from a sedentary lifestyle by incorporating regular exercise into your routine. Whether it’s a daily walk, a workout session, or a new sport, find an activity you enjoy and make it a priority.
Excessive Screen Time
Prolonged screen time, especially before bedtime, can disrupt sleep patterns and contribute to feelings of fatigue. The negative consequences of spending too much time in front of screens are well-documented and can range from disrupted sleep patterns to eye strain, fatigue, and even psychological stress.
Set boundaries for your screen use, engage in non-digital activities like reading and create a relaxing bedtime routine to promote better sleep.
Poor Eating Habits
You probably have some healthy and mindful eating resolutions planned for the new year. Unhealthy eating habits can take a toll on both physical and mental well-being. Therefore, make a conscious effort to reduce processed foods, and practice mindful eating.
Also, take a look at your eating patterns, are they irregular? Irregular eating patterns can disrupt digestion, blood sugar levels, and nutrient absorption, potentially leading to weight gain. It’s best to establish a regular meal schedule that aligns with your daily routine. Small changes in your diet can lead to significant improvements in your overall health.
Negative Self-Talk
Negative self-talk can erode your self-esteem and hinder your personal growth. Cultivate self-compassion by replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Focus on your strengths and accomplishments, and surround yourself with supportive influences.
Procrastination
Procrastination can lead to increased stress and a sense of unfulfillment. Kickstart your journey to a happier 2024 by addressing procrastination head-on. Create a realistic schedule, break tasks into manageable steps, and reward yourself for accomplishments.
Lack of Gratitude
Cultivate an attitude of gratitude by appreciating the positive aspects of your life. Keep a gratitude journal, express thanks to those around you, and focus on the positive, even in challenging situations.
As we usher in a new year, let go of unfulfilling habits to make room for a happier and more fulfilling 2024. Remember, changing habits takes time and effort, so it’s okay to start with one or two habits and gradually work your way through the list.
Embrace positive changes, prioritize self-care, and commit to fostering a healthier lifestyle. By leaving habits behind that do not serve you well, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the challenges of the coming year and enjoy a renewed sense of well-being. Cheers to a happy and healthy 2024!
