Maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle often takes a back seat to all the other things we have going on in our lives. Let’s take a look at ten healthy habits for a vibrant and balanced life to maintain our health.
Science says that on average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact. In other studies, it takes anywhere from 18 days to 254 days to form a new habit. What this breaks down to and if you want to set your expectations appropriately, the truth is that it will probably take anywhere from two months to eight months to build a new behavior into your life — not 21 days. Also, how long it takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances.

Some of us have long working hours, sedentary jobs and fast-paced living style can lead to stress, fatigue, and a decline in our overall well-being. However, incorporating simple yet effective healthy habits into our daily routine can make a significant difference.
This topic is of a personal interest to me so let’s explore some practices that contribute to a vibrant and balanced life together.
Prioritize Regular Exercise
Physical activity is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise not only helps in maintaining a healthy weight but also boosts mood and reduces stress. I aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week. My exercise of choice is walking but choose what works best for your lifestyle and limitations. Whether it’s brisk walking, jogging, yoga, or weight training, find an activity that you enjoy to make it a sustainable habit.
Nutrient-Rich Diet
Eating a well-balanced and nutrient-rich diet is crucial for overall health. Include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your meals. Minimize the consumption of processed foods, sugary snacks, and excessive caffeine. Hydration is equally important; so aim to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day to keep your body functioning optimally. Here’s a hack I use to keep hydrated through out the day. Fill a tumbler with water and keep it with you and sip away.
Prioritize Sleep
Quality sleep is often underrated but plays a vital role in maintaining good health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to allow your body and mind to rejuvenate. A consistent sleep routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day is a good start. Also, create a relaxing bedtime ritual to signal your body that it’s time to wind down. Turn the television and cell phone off. That text can wait!
Manage Stress
Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on both our physical and mental health. Incorporate stress management techniques into your daily routine. This can include meditation, deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or engaging in activities that bring you joy. Taking short breaks during the day to relax and recharge can make a significant difference in your stress levels. Step away from the desk every hour to stretch and take a mindful break. I find that when I have a difficult task and I step away for few minutes, when I return I see a fresh way of solving the issue.
Cultivate Positive Relationships
Human connection is a fundamental aspect of a vibrant life. Nurture meaningful relationships with friends, family, and colleagues. Surround yourself with positive influences who support your well-being. Your social connections not only provide emotional support but also contribute to a sense of belonging and purpose. Keep this thought in mind, be where you are celebrated not tolerated.
Mindful Eating
It’s easy to eat without paying attention to what and how much we consume. Practice mindful eating savor each bite, pay attention to hunger and fullness cues, and avoid distractions like screens during meals. This simple habit can help prevent overeating and promote a healthier relationship with food.
Continuous Learning
Stimulate your mind by engaging in continuous learning. Whether it’s reading books, attending workshops, or taking up a new hobby, intellectual stimulation is essential for mental well-being. Learning new things not only keeps your brain active but also adds a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment to your life.
Digital Detox
I can sense the cringe here. We are connected to our phones, tablets and laptops and we just cannot imagine being without them even for an hour. I’m guilty as well. However, while technology has become an integral part of our lives, excessive screen time can have adverse effects on our health. Take regular breaks from screens, especially before bedtime. Set boundaries for social media use and consider a digital detox day where you disconnect from electronic devices to focus on real-world experiences. Sunday is my digital detox day as I use this day to reset and take care of myself. Do you have a day for self-care?
Practice Gratitude:
I talk about this a lot because it is important not to get so consume in ourself that we forget about others. Gratitude has been linked to improved mental health and life satisfaction. I created a digital gratitude journal with prompts to assist you in your journaling. If your preference is a paper journal then check here. Don’t make it complicated. The aim is to cultivate a positive mindset by practicing gratitude. Take time each day to reflect on the things you are thankful for. Keeping a gratitude journal can be a simple yet powerful way to shift your focus towards the positive aspects of your life and on others.
Regular Health Check-ups
Pencil in that annual check up every year. Get that mammogram, dental and vision appointment on schedule. Prevention is key to maintaining good health. Schedule regular health check-ups and screenings to detect and address potential health issues early on. Keep track of your physical and mental well-being and consult healthcare professionals for guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
A vibrant and balanced life is achievable through the incorporation of these healthy habits into your daily routine. While it may seem overwhelming to make significant changes all at once, start small and gradually build on these habits. The journey to a healthier lifestyle is a personal one, finding what works best for you is essential.
By prioritizing our physical and mental well-being, we can create a life that is not only healthy but also fulfilling and vibrant.
